I like birds. I like to draw them because they're a little bit like
dinosaurs, and who doesn't like dinosaurs? Mostly I draw them to learn
more about them.

The oil spill is a tragic event for the people of the Gulf, for the
environment and for the animals who make their home there. It's the
images of oiled birds that make me most sad and angry -- their eyes,
especially, make me feel like we're betraying something important.

Thank you for putting together the blog.

Regards,
Carmen Yount (from Spokane, WA)

"I am a freelance illustrator and designer, open to new assignments. You may see my portfolio at http://www.artbyhensley.com/ or check out my blog at http://lindahensley.blogspot.com/.

These seashell pictures are on scratchboard because I think the black backgrounds feel like the black oil, but I’d rather focus on the beauty of the Gulf, and what’s prettier than seashells? For such a small donation, I think these would look great as framed set."

Steve Loya is an art teacher in Leesburg, Virginia. "Animals, as well as imaginary beasts have always been topics of creative interest for me, so I thought I'd use both as subject matter for my two cards. I've been wanting to get involved in some way, but like many, felt somewhat helpless. For me, this project was a no-brainer however, and it's good to see something like this around, with so many contributers. Thanks for the opportunity!"

123. SOLD "Make Change" -IF

123. SOLD

Growing up in Houston, family trips were frequent to Galveston. I have always been fascinated with Sand Dollars as a currency. Digging in sand bars you could find them buried in the sand - still alive with 100's of little feet they used to move around. It is sad to think so many sea creatures will be devastated by the oil spill. So take out 10 Sand Dollars and help make some change!

I currently live in Rhode Island after living the past sixteen years on the Monterey Peninsula in California. I'm a native New Englander who has come home to roost. I never live far from the ocean because I feel so connected to it.
Monterey Bay is a marine sanctuary. I feel incredibly blessed to have lived there!
Narragansett Bay is also a wonderful place teeming with sealife. There is an organization called Save the Bay that does many fundraisers and educational programs to educate the public about the importance of our oceans.

I'm a fine artist, an illustrator and a published children's book author making my home in Barrington, Rhode Island. I was a veterinary technician for most of my life, now making housecalls to those who are in need of help administering care of their ailing pets.

Thank you for this opportunity! Let these ripples make their mark ;)

The Artists have spoken- they want to cause a Ripple

Today Ripple joins with Illustration Friday. IF is the site that has launched a thousand portfolios. Penelope Dullaghan and Brianna Privett run a weekly creative outlet for a global group of artists. They were kind enough to open their doors to me. Those doors were blown off. You are going to see a lot of art now! So many people are so upset by the oil spill and the devasted coastal waters. The outpouring of care for the animals is heartwarming in the midst of the heartbreak. Thank you Illustration Friday.

I've told my daughter the story of the "Shell phones". When you pick up a sea shell - and hear the sound of the ocean- that's the dial tone of the shell phone- Your direct line to the life of the oceans. When she was younger, I would catch her- along the beach or in her room-shell to ear saying "Hello?" - (sometimes she'd have conversations- with what or who?- ;) We're just now getting thru wizards, fairies and unicorns)

I'm not too old to use my imagination and believe that we have a bit of the sea captured in sea shells. I love shells and you'll find them all over the place here in my house in Long Island. I call them nature's jewelry. And if we did have a direct line to those creatures of the sea right now- Wouldn't we help?

Kelly Light is an Illustrator living in Long Island and part time in Amherst,MA. Her first book is coming out this Fall.
