Charis Loke

In creating these cards, my initial aim was explore the texture of bird feathers caught in oil - they have, at least to me, a sort of morbid beauty when rendered in pencil and removed from their alarming context. Ultimately, the viewer should not merely admire them at a distance, but begin to question why such a sight should even be made possible, and then look for ways to act.

Short bio: I'm a college student/ artist currently living in Providence, RI, though I hail from Malaysia. Studying biochemistry involves a great deal of marvelling at life, and art is another way for me to do so. More of my work can be found at http://charislokeart.blogspot.com and http://charisloke.deviantart.com.

Revelle Taillon

I am an artist who lives in New Hampshire, but for part of my life I lived in the Gulf in Pensacola and the white sand beaches were so beautiful. I can only imagine what they will look like soiled with that oil. My Dad lives in St. Petersburg as do my sister and one of my brothers. I haven't heard any news from them on this oil spill but I'm sure it's on their minds every day.

I draw my birds in pen and ink and colored pencil.

You can see more of my bird art on my blog at:

I am happy to submit this piece of work for the benefit of all these poor animals that they can rescue, and cry silently for those underwater species. We can only imagine what devastation this will be doing to them.

I'm "throwing in my stones" in the hope that these small things can and will
make a difference. They are watercolor, acrylic and collage.

I am a designer and a painter. I live near Tampa, FL and spend time at the
beautiful, white, powdery beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. I was just there
this past weekend, sitting by the turquoise water, watching the birds flying
and chirping and the swooped and swam. The oil slick looms over all of us
like a dark cloud that just keeps growing as it gets closer and closer...

any new memories for many decades to come?

Nell Ma’luf
I’ve been drawing all my life and have more recently had a great time transferring my drawings into digital media for coloring. So this will be a printed card – it can be matte or glossy or laminated - let me know if you have preferences. You can see my more recent illustrations on my blog here – http://nellosillos.blogspot.com/
I live in the Boston area now, but I grew up many years ago in the South. We went to the Florida panhandle beaches every summer, sometimes twice, for more than ten years. Back then, the only thing we feared in the water were jellyfish, seaweed patches, and the small schools of fish that swam through the shallow areas and tickled our legs. Looks like this oil spill will erase the opportunity for any new memories for many decades to come.

I am an artist/cartoonist. I've lived on the west coast my whole life, never more than an hour from the ocean. I've always loved the wildlife and natural settings, and I think everyone should have an opportunity to enjoy beaches, and the multitude of life on them, around them, near them. Knowing about the Gulf coast catastrophe hurts me deeply, and I'm ecstatic to be able to do something to help.

I'm an Australian based illustrator with a global background. Much of my work comments on eco-topics and events, often with humour to provoke thought - but there is nothing remotely ironic about this subject. Horrified by the destruction in the Gulf - we are all affected. A great initiative - every bit helps.

My name is Carla Martell. I'm finding the way back home to my old
loves of illustration, printmaking & design, after ages spent working
in the crazy haphazard world of dance and theatre. I like making
things and creating endless to-do lists, and I've been taking part in
Illustration Friday challenges since March. I live in Auckland, New
Zealand.

This illustration is an artist's proof of an original etching, created
on zinc plate. It's on heavy cartridge in green-black tones. The image
size is 14.75 x 19.5 cm (approx 5.75 x 7.75").

Bonnie Jean Woolger Decatur,Ga.

Wooden pen maker, printmaker, book maker, I grew up on the beach in south Florida and live in fear and horror of the oil spill. When I was 11 a sea turtle laid her eggs in our garden on the wrong side of A1A and so when they hatched I filled my pockets and my shirt and made many trips across the road to get the baby turtles on their way to the ocean before they could be hit by cars. I can’t save them from this.
