Live your life wide open

Hi Everybody!! It's Kelly here! I want to thank each and every one of you, Artist and generous supporter. What started as a little effort to do a small act to help the oiled animals of the Gulf disaster - has grown bigger and faster than I ever thought. (I didn't think- I'm just wingin it)
I have to adjust my administering of the art in and the donations in so that I can have a bit of my life back. While you all have been creating little miracles in the form of sketchcards - I have stopped doing all of the art I need to. I have Mount Laundrymore waiting for me and it would be nice to shower and feed my kid a non-frozen meal.
I will fall into a pattern of posting new art only in the evenings. It takes me a day or so to get through all of the donations and process them. I may stumble a bit - mess up here or there. I ask for your forgiveness as I'm a typical artist- I live in organized chaos.

What has grown organically here is so much more than me. It has truly rippled across the world. I am so proud to be an illustrator and share that thread with all of you.

'I love animals and am so sad about the oil spill, so I am very happy to be able to do something to help this cause. The jellyfish is a pencil sketch on cream card (8.5" x 7") and the whale shark with remora fish is an acrylic painting on thin cardboard (7" x 4.5"). My blog is: http://hmarechal.blogspot.com/'

Do you know how rare it is to see a whale shark?? Swimming at tremendous depths - they are not often spotted. They syphon their food by sucking in like a vacuum. They would be sucking in that oil and that dispersant straight inside. My daughter loves whale sharks. There are so many species effected- countless.-Kelly

My name is Tessa. I was born and raised in South Africa and have lived and travelled extensively throughout that majestic continent. I currently live near the ocean in Norfolk, England. My art is a celebration of life and through my art I endeavour in some small way to encapsulate the essence, the spirit and the strength of the exceptional people I have been so very privileged to meet. It is true that when one tugs at a single thing in nature, he or she find it attached to the rest of the world and that is what I try hard to express in all the work that I do. Katie Davis

These two pieces are originally from my first picture book, WHO HOPS?, which is for very young children. I've seen kids laughing and loving this book, and it struck me that their innocence and that of the sea creatures being hurt by this disaster are closely related. I've enhanced the images digitally because I wanted to juxtapose that innocence with the horror.

After hearing that the oil companies just copied off their emergency plans (protecting walruses in the Gulf? What the--?) I thought about the underwater animals that have yet to be affected and hope they will remain so.

She is the author/illustrator of picture books, including Who Hops?, and Kindergarten Rocks! and the upcoming Little Chicken’s Big Day. Her novel, The Curse of Addy McMahon, is a Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Book of the Year. She is known for her engaging and interactive books that appeal to children of all ages, and is a popular presenter at conferences and schools.
