222. On the Beach

222.
My name is Shalini Raman, and I currently reside in Auburn Hills, Michigan. These are my card contributions to the subject 'Ripple', concerning the Oil Spill.

This is a work in watercolor plus pen. I chose to show some fish here; I just can't imagine how many fish would be suffocated to death since the thick oil on water wouldn't really allow oxygen exchange to occur at the surface of the water. Though I chose to show the pictures more as a one panel cartoons, there is definitely nothing funny about this whole incident.

You can see more of my work at my blog.

I really wanted to do something to help, especially after seeing countless pictures of these poor animals dying because of the oil and the people who are loosing their livelihood. I live in Texas, and even though the oil hasn't reached our shores just yet, we are still connected to those it has. I had each of my three children draw a picture of the oil problem through their eyes. I drew one from a picture that tugs at my heartstrings every time I see it.
These are digital pictures drawn using an art program called ArtRage on a wacom tablet. You will be getting a print on postcard quality paper.

Bonnie Jean Woolger Decatur,Ga.

Wooden pen maker, printmaker, book maker, I grew up on the beach in south Florida and live in fear and horror of the oil spill. When I was 11 a sea turtle laid her eggs in our garden on the wrong side of A1A and so when they hatched I filled my pockets and my shirt and made many trips across the road to get the baby turtles on their way to the ocean before they could be hit by cars. I can’t save them from this.

They say they've killed the well.  They say 75% of the oil is either gone or dispersed.  They say the waters are reopened for fishing. They say, they say, they say.......what do the animals have to say?
This is all great news, but the work is far from over.  Clean up will continue for a good while.
My Gulf Gulls, Reporter, Herald and Enquirer are out there speaking their minds.  Just listen and you'll hear their findings.
I'm an illustrator who lives far from the Gulf and far from any ocean.  I consume petroleum products without much thought.  But I love animals and hope my small contribution to the marine life recovery adds to the awesome power of Kelly Light's Ripple Sketch project.  I'm tossing in three more pebbles.

937. soldGulf Pelican

937.sold

My name is Aimée van Drimmelen and I'm a freelance illustrator based in Montreal who works in pen & ink. I have a deep respect for the natural world and it's creatures.

About the piece: This image was directly inspired by the gulf oil spill. Painted in July 2010 on a recuperated 22" drumskin (see my website for more on this), it was part of Drawing Expo 2010 at Galerie Rye in Montreal. It depicts a brown pelican flying out of the water. I found myself getting very emotional while painting this because pelicans are my favourite bird, they are huge, gorgeous and majestic. Watching them flying and fishing is one of my favourite activities (we have white ones in Canada). Seeing images of these creatures floating up dead on the shores of the gulf, saturated with oil has broken my heart. But I wanted to stay as positive as possible with this illustration. This pelican has survived, but there is still fear or anger in its eyes. It is determined and will overcome this stupid preventable mistake. My only hope is that humanity can learn a lesson from this tragedy and do the same.
