My name is Aimée van Drimmelen and I'm a freelance illustrator based in Montreal who works in pen & ink. I have a deep respect for the natural world and it's creatures.

About the piece: This image was directly inspired by the gulf oil spill. Painted in July 2010 on a recuperated 22" drumskin (see my website for more on this), it was part of Drawing Expo 2010 at Galerie Rye in Montreal. It depicts a brown pelican flying out of the water. I found myself getting very emotional while painting this because pelicans are my favourite bird, they are huge, gorgeous and majestic. Watching them flying and fishing is one of my favourite activities (we have white ones in Canada). Seeing images of these creatures floating up dead on the shores of the gulf, saturated with oil has broken my heart. But I wanted to stay as positive as possible with this illustration. This pelican has survived, but there is still fear or anger in its eyes. It is determined and will overcome this stupid preventable mistake. My only hope is that humanity can learn a lesson from this tragedy and do the same.

Ilona Drew is a designer/Illustrator living and working in Brighton, England. Ilona worked in-house for 6 years designing greeting cards until going freelance in order to explore her creativity and explore textiles and homeware design. Ilona's Grandma was one of the first members of Greenpeace and she grew up looking at posters of whales in her Grandmas house and this was the inspiration for her sad whale illustration.

LET THERE BE SONGS TO FILL THE AIR! WE DID IT!! $10,000.00!!

Ripple has passed it's goal of raising $10,000.00 to help the organizations cleaning the animals of the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill!!

This afternoon - I did the math (it took awhile) and it is true!! We are already over the goal. Wow.

I can not Thank all of you enough for this effort! What small acts can do when we do them together! As a thank you to all of you who gave your art and your heart with a donation - I did this quick 8 X 10 illustration. If you email ripplesketches@verizon.net - 20 Prints are available as my Thank You to any of you who helped who would like one.

So what's next for Ripple? We go out with a BANG! - We run through September. Teachers have asked to do this with their students when school starts. September 19th - I will be at the Eric Carle Museum working on art for the volunteers with the kids in the studio. More details on that to follow...  And!!! We still have lots of great art coming in, beautiful art is already waiting to help the animals of the Gulf. We will be bumping up all of the great art that flew past too fast to sell in the early days. I will probably announce when the end of Ripple is in sight but let's not dwell on that- Let's celebrate what we've done and work to do some more! Though the oil is no longer spilling, the birds and mammals and sea turtles still need our help and the volunteers are still tirelessly working to give them a chance at life.

The day after I decided to participate in this, I went snorkeling at Waikiki.  For the first time in my life, I saw a Hawaiian bobtail squid.  It was only about one inch long, white with red spots, and it hovered just beyond my reach, staring at me with one eye. As I stared back, in awe, I thought about the animals in Florida and how a disaster like this would ruin our ecosystem in Hawaii.  I'm so blessed to live here, and I try not to take Nature's beauty for granted.

I'm honored and grateful for the opportunity to help in some small way.  I love seeing what the other artists are doing! Thank you, Kelly, for making this happen, and thank you to those who will buy my art.

I’m a various style illustrator, animal lover and pet guardian.

I felt helpless against the tragedy of the oil spill affecting the lives of all species in the Gulf Coast, and I wanted to contribute in the only way I can at this time. The two pieces I offer, “Hurt” and “Hope,” depict pain, desperation, pleading, helplessness, to hope and regeneration in the future. Each piece is hand-drawn with pencil, watercolor, markers and multiliners on 2.5”x3.5” bristol.
