"I’m putting on an exhibition / auction of UK and Irish creative work to raise funds for victims of the tsunami.
Artists include: writers, photographers, designers and illustrators from the advertising industry who are kindly donating work to be auctioned/sold.
I have already received the first piece for the exhibition – a beautiful poem by Irish poet, Patrick Chapman.
I’ve had lots of very positive feedback, offers of help, and advice on how to put on an exhibition!
If anyone out there wants to donate some artwork, please drop me a line. It can either be something bespoke, related to the disaster, or something from your archives. Or, if you know someone else you think might want to help, send them this post.
The medium isn’t important either. It could be: a painting, illustration, photograph, poem, prose, haiku, graphic design etc.
What it must be: is something that you think someone else might want to put on their wall.
The main goal for this is to raise money for the people of Japan." -David Milligan-Croft

I have watched many times think "How does he do that?" - He's working his magic for good tonight.

The annual art raffle benefits the Texas Library Disaster Relief Fund, created to assist libraries in our state as they recover from natural disasters. The raffle will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 during the second general session of the TLA Annual Conference in Austin. A ticket form is available for the convenience of those who will not be at conference this spring (mail by Monday, April 4); and tickets will be sold in the 4th Street Lobby of the convention center and and at various events at the conference: $5 each or 5 for $20.

Artists have generous hearts - More for Japan

 

On March 11, an 8.9 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan near the city of Sendai. It is the most powerful earthquake they ever experienced. Artists Help Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund is responding to the immediate needs of survivors as well as short-term to long-term recovery projects undertaken by the affected communities.

RIPPLE NEWS:Illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka starts his own ripple... The "Joe and Shirl Scholarship"

I hope you guys got a blog update and RAN here to Ripple to see what new excitement in the world of do-gooding is going on!

Ripple's own contributor and Illustrator Extraordinaire- Jarrett Krosoczka has created a wonderful foundation to raise funds to provide scholarships for art studies to kids with family challenges.  The "Joe and Shirl Scholarship" honors the gift his Grandparents gave him- the chance to pursue his dreams - by paying it forward.

I am particularly excited by the chance to be a character in a Lunch Lady book. Ripple had lots and lots of wonderful librarians supporting our cause- I know, in part because of the faboo illustrators who gave original art- So, Come on Back now ya hear? - Seriously, what better thing to do then find a way to give back what we can - especially when we feel so lucky ourselves to be where we are. Give a kid an opportunity to explore art and get some great art at the same time. It's a win - win!

Kelly Light here.... Ripple has now finished what it set out to do. All of the art is left up here for your enjoyment. If any of the artists wish to sell the unsold art on your own to benefit these organizations- that would be fabulous. If anyone finds art here that they would like to buy to benefit these organizations- most of the artists have links in their posts from which you can contact them.  Artists can also mail any unsold art directly to the organizations as a "Thank You" - to a volunteer. (They're still there - still working and will be for a long time)

On a personal note - it was a thrilling ride - watching the art come in. Some of the well known artists like Mo Willems- made me shed a tear with how touching his sketches and words were. Some of the lesser known artists knocked my socks off - like Michael Fleming and Colleen Madden. Artists who I know personally and who's work I am familiar with - surprised me with the heart and sweetness in their sketches - like Jarrett Krosoczka and Kathy Blackmore. The funny ones- the biting ones - the hopeful ones.. all were so diverse in style and approach- but all unified by the love of the ocean, the beach, the birds and the animals. I have a list of favorites 100 sketches long.

I hope what we've done leaves behind the inspiration and the belief- That anyone can do something to help- no matter how small - when faced with what seems like an insurmountable problem. It just takes one voice - one person to create a space for hope and action - like they say in Field of Dreams "If you build it, they will come".

Closing Day

Ripple closes tonight at midnight. We are at $10, 930.00 raised for the animals of the Gulf!!! We may not reach $11,000.00 but we have reached around the world and back to the oily waters off of Louisiana.

I've always had a particular passion for whimsical children’s illustrations, animals and fantastical beasts. I began drawing as a young child, brimming with wild images from my imagination. This creative expression grew into a genuine love of drawing, and eventually design and photography, and has blossomed into a personally rewarding and lucrative freelance career. The animal kingdom has been a great inspiration to me throughout my artistic life. How all the creatures of the world developed in their own unique way is just amazing to me, I am in awe of the natural living world. Life is the most beautiful art I have ever seen. At heart, I am an adventurer, traveler, and explorer of life. My artwork is intrinsically inspired and enriched by my life's experiences and adventures both at home and abroad. I am an active member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and an award winning, Signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America.

My sketchcard artworks for Ripple are 2.5"x3.5" and were created with colored pencils, pen & ink, and gouache on several different surfaces including rag board, arches hot press watercolor paper, and colored & textured cardstock.

When not illustrating in a small Seattle apartment, I’m usually out in the wilds of ocean, grass, and mountain - overwhelmed by the big thing we are a small part of. The age, beauty, diversity, and power of the natural world is an endless inspiration for art and story - there is still so much we don’t understand! And my heart crushes when the natural world is run over by our human emotions of material-want and greed.

Arthi Aravind is a Marketing/Environmental Policy student at the College of William & Mary. Art and nature have been her two passions since she was small and she is just starting to branch out into the world of illustration and graphic design. My name is Nic Badila and I live in Atlanta, GA. I am 11 years old and I am an artist who LOVES animals! I wish I could go rescue them, but my mom doesn't want me to get sick.
