Leann Webb is a compulsive doodler and part time cartoonist who grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She has a life-long love for the beach, especially the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. When the news of the explosion of the Deep Water Horizon oil well reached her, she was saddened, both for the families of the 11 men who lost their lives, as well as the knowledge of how life in and along the Gulf will never be the same.

The drawing reflects how everyone, both man and beast, is affected by this disaster. Not only is the sea life compromised but also is the livelihood of the people who live along the gulf.

"Under the Sea" is done in color pencil on paper. "Fishing Trip" is done in acrylic on 16"x 20" canvas of a father and son fishing on the beach at Gulf Shores, AL. Little did Leann know when she painted this that this familiar sight wasn't going to be so familiar for long.

Hey Everyone!

I enjoyed a lovely day at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst , MA this past Sunday. I told people about Ripple, showed examples of the wonderful art that you all have created from your hearts and talked about the work the volunteers do. The  museum visitors  made their own pieces of art to send to the volunteers at the IBRRC as Thank Yous for all of their hard work. I met David Hyde Costello and saw him draw little lovely sketches for each and every person who came to see him. He had a giraffe puppet of the character from his book "I Can Help"- that he made that was amazing.

We are in the last 10 days of Ripple. At the end of the month - all sales will stop. I will leave the blog up for people to come and see what you all did. I invite all of the artists to do one of 2 things with the art that has not sold. 1. Sell it on your own blog to benefit one of these four organizations. 2. Mail it to the organization of your choice as a Thank you to a volunteer along with a note. All links are on the right.

About the illustrator:

Philadelphia-based artist Kate Garchinsky is an independent art director and award-winning writer/illustrator who has specialized in all segments of children’s media, family and youth marketing for the past 13 years. In 2009 her first children’s book manuscript, Time to Fly, received a letter of commendation in the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators' Barbara Karlin Grant Competition. More recently, Garchinsky conceptualized, co-produced and created all illustrations for the children’s album, “Sing Me to Sleep: Indie Lullabies“, released on American Laundromat Records in May 2010. Kate aspires to inspire and enrich young minds with her stories and art.

The family of Yellow-Crowned Night Herons that inspired Time to Fly nested in southern New Jersey, an area where they are listed as a threatened species. This heron breeds as far north as New England, but winters heavily in the coastal wetlands along the Gulf of Mexico. Oil in the marshes, mudflats and mangroves pose a serious threat to their livelihood, contaminating their much-needed food supply after a long, exhaustive fall migration. 

"Volunteers from Tri-State Bird Rescue in Newark, Delaware—located minutes from my home—were first responders on the scene in the Deepwater Horizon Wildlife Response. I can tell you from personal experience that Tri-State is a small organization that not only needs but deserves donations and support. No bird rescue effort is too big or too small. In July I took an injured Scarlet Tanager from my yard to their facility and in a week was invited to retrieve her and release her back where she belonged. In two weeks I shall attend an information session for aspiring bird rescue volunteers at the facility. Birds so bring joy and inspiration to my life, I am simply compelled to protect them."

These two pieces are originally from my first picture book, WHO HOPS?, which is for very young children. I've seen kids laughing and loving this book, and it struck me that their innocence and that of the sea creatures being hurt by this disaster are closely related. I've enhanced the images digitally because I wanted to juxtapose that innocence with the horror.

After hearing that the oil companies just copied off their emergency plans (protecting walruses in the Gulf? What the--?) I thought about the underwater animals that have yet to be affected and hope they will remain so.

She is the author/illustrator of picture books, including Who Hops?, and Kindergarten Rocks! and the upcoming Little Chicken’s Big Day. Her novel, The Curse of Addy McMahon, is a Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Book of the Year. She is known for her engaging and interactive books that appeal to children of all ages, and is a popular presenter at conferences and schools.

In the spirit of helping others, create a postcard using special papers, watercolor paints and other exciting drawing tools in The Studio. The Carle will send all of the cards from the day to workers helping clean up the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
