Hi Everybody!!
This is Kelly and I am out here in Los Angeles for the SCBWI Summer 2010 conference. I have been here since Friday- and ran the sale of Dan Santat's beautiful card from here. Thanks to Dan for being so generous with his time and talent. I got to thank him in person and hope he pardons my geek-out when meeting him. I have been away from running things but will be home tomorrow night. My team of helpers have held down the fort for me- Thanks Nina, Nicole, Bonnie, Gina and Anna.
I had a moment yesterday out here during a session with the amazing illustrator E.B. Lewis. He brought up the oil spill and said- "What are we as artists going to do about it?" (I'm paraphrasing...) He went on to say "My father said there are 3 kinds of people- Sub Humans, Humans, and Super Humans". "Sub Humans are like Hitler or Osama Bin laden- people who do harm, cause pain and suffering.""Humans are people who exist- but don't do anything- don't act - don't stand up and make a difference." "Super Humans are the ones who say "I will not sit by and do nothing""They are the ones who try to make a difference." - I burst into tears. Like a fool... I hope he didn't notice...
I have been so busy running this- the absolute SCALE of what Ripple has done- what it has become- and what it continues to do- hadn't hit me until then. As I sniffed and calmed down- my friend Amy Farrier- quietly said, "Kelly Light- super human" -and the tears flowed again.
This is so much more then me - I met at least a dozen of the artists here in L.A. that have given art to Ripple. Artists like Kim Fleming from Australia and Linda Silvestri, Woody Miller , Frank Hanson- and so many others. I got to stand up and describe Ripple in a breakout session with illustrator Priscilla Burris - and many more illustrators have expressed an interest in doing art for Ripple.
So- Ripple's ripples are going strong. We can start to feel optimistic that the well will be filled in with cement and killed but the animal impact isn't going away- so neither will we. We will keep sketching and helping the animals of the Gulf. Because we are artists and we are super humans.

I am a visual artist living in Stouffville Ontario Canada. My work is in watercolour, mixed media and Sumi-e [Japanese ink painting] I just happened across this project and think it is a fantastic idea. My family spent many wonderful days on gulf coast beaches and I wanted to make a contribution.
These are two EnsÅ paintings - Japanese meaning circle. It symbolizes enlightenment, strength, elegance, the Universe, and the void. It also symbolizes an "expression of the moment". All things we need to deal with this crisis. It is usually painted in one movement and there is no possibility of modification. They are original paintings 2.5 in by 3.5 ATC size in acrylic paint on rice paper mounted on acid free card stock with my chop or seal.
A small contribution to a very large problem.

Brave Lucie is a double sided and laminated card by Ginger Nielson.
Her "Baby Turtle" piece is a digital watercolor. Two sides, one enlargement on the back, and laminated. Both sides are shown here but the card is created back to back.
It was so impressed to see the baby turtle rescue and the care given to each tiny creature. If this image will help them back into the clean ocean, I am happy to participate.

Bonnie Jean Woolger Decatur,Ga.
Wooden pen maker, printmaker, book maker, I grew up on the beach in south Florida and live in fear and horror of the oil spill. When I was 11 a sea turtle laid her eggs in our garden on the wrong side of A1A and so when they hatched I filled my pockets and my shirt and made many trips across the road to get the baby turtles on their way to the ocean before they could be hit by cars. I can’t save them from this.

Each card is available for a $10 donation. See details at right
My name is Penny Noble. I am a freelance Artist and I live in Manhattan Beach Ca. My inspiration for this picture was taken from a photograph I have of my Grandmother taken in the early 1920's in Redondo Beach, Ca. I love the bathing suit and I wondered if it was scandalous in that time. I want to thank Kelly again for all her hard work and for giving me a chance to contribute to helping clean up the horrible oil spill. My 11 year old Granddaughter was moved to paint a Dolphin picture to help too. She was very happy when it was sold. You can see some of my work at http://pennynoble.blogspot.com/
This painting is 6x8" and is canvas on board and acrylic paint.
